Hi eveyone,
Im a new member to the forum. Just starting out as a traditional window cleaner. I have cleaned windows before when I worked for a patio cleaning company but am on my own for the first time.
Got my van and equiptment, work is slowly beginning to come in, mainly through canvassing and local advertising.
I look forward to gettting to know the other members and have read some of the topics with interest. Any advice from you succesful window cleaners would be gratefully received! Particulary on picking up customers. Regards, Andrew

Hi All
Well i just wanted to share Our success story..
My husband was working for a Window Cleaning company in Enfield Middlesex. They are a big company with oodles and oodles of work. At the beginnig the company were great plenty of work ( Had to pay a commission 28% on all work) within a few weeks, the owner started showing her true colours. I dont think i have ever met such a rude arrogant nasty piece of filth in my life, it was quite clear she made everyones life a total misery - she then increased the commission to 30% within weeks had increased in to 32% plus 17.5% vat on top of that. I questioned everything - Knew it wasn't right..Then my husband had an accident and fell of his ladder and fractured his back. Luckily for him it wasn't to terrible and was able to return to work within 6 weeks.
She continued to make my husbands life a total misery, every day to the point where my husband start to become depressed. After 2 and a half years my husband decided enough was enough and left
In March 2008 we decided we would start up on our own.
So the pair of us, me a complete novice, looked up everything we could to find ways of developing new work, the best and fastes way to create a new round.
We went door to door canvassing, which i might add was a total success, leaflet dropping, internet advertising, anywhere we could put ourselves, we did and the work has flooded in ever since. (I might add advertise in as many free places as u can, this helps the positioning of your web site if you have one)
In less then 2 years, we have over 1500 domestic customers, we are a major sub contractors and clean a major high street store throughout london and the south east. 4 Full time Window Cleaners 1 part time, and 3 Domestic Cleaners.
Next year 2010, we are expecting a turn over of at least £200.000
My advice to anyone starting up is that..It doesn't cost an awful lot to begin, look around for cheap printers ( try daynightprint.co.uk), there are plenty of others online too. Door to Door canvassing is great, it has and still is working well for us, i still go out for 2-3 hours 3-4 times a week and still get new work. Get a web site go to yahoo or bt, easy to set up, and cost between £6-£10 a month. Leafleting is ok, but as we all know most go straight in the bin, you may get 1 out of ever 1000, statistically that 1 every 10 streets, thats a lot of walking and a lot of wasted hours.
It just goes to prove in time of recession there is plenty of work out there for the taking, you just gotta be hungry enough.
For the person who made my husbands life a misery a big thanks ( F**K U ) who's laughing now...!!!
